Hungry for Linkage: Free Cake, Virginia Brewery News and a Scary Robot Restaurant in China

Seventy-seven years ago today in Washington DC the first Giant supermarket opened.  Head to any area location to celebrate with a free slice of cake, which one can only hope will also be “Giant”.  Available from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today only. [OneNews]

Philly-style hoagies now available in Merrifeld‘s Mosaic District with the opening of Taylor Gourmet.  Its Philadelphia authenticity can be seen in the sandwich names and the iconic ingredients like roast pork, broccoli rabe and sharp provolone cheese. [EaterDC]

#DoGoodDineOut Herndon church hosts a chocolate festival to raise money for Help Hungry Kids.  Pick up some gourmet and homemade chocolate treats for your Valentine. [Patch] 

 Long lines for short stacks. For yesterday’s National Pancake Day  IHOP offered free pancakes to raise money and awareness for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, a tradition since 2006. [IHOP]

Department of Justice  sues to block international beer giant, InBev, from controlling even more of the beer market with the purchase of Corona. Another win for the (beer) little guy? According to the Washington Business Journal, Old Ox Breweryis scheduled to join the ranks of Ashburn’s microbrewers sometime in the fall of 2013.[WBJ]

After a quick closure and slight renovations, Rhodeside Grill in Courthouse neighborhood of Arlington is set to reopen tomorrow. Look for a few more seats at the bar and an expanded cocktail area on your next visit. New menu is rumored to be coming soon, too. [ARLNow]

 #DoGoodDineOut  Caffe Amouri of Vienna launches a “Get Social” campaign for the month.  For all Facebook likes, check-ins and other social media outreach by customers the restaurant will donate 10% of the check to Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna.[Patch]

Reston’s Market Street Bar and Grill which previously hosted live jazz and was known for its Sunday buffet to slated to close this month.  Its space in the Hyatt Regency Hotel will house another restaurant opening summer 2013. Hotel management remains tight lipped on the details for the new eatery. [Patch]
